Dear Members,
I realise that this is the first hard copy of information that has been sent out since the Spring but trust that many of you are now using our fantastic website www.worc.org.uk to keep in touch with events forthcoming and past.
On this point I would like to express my sincere thanks to Stuart Allen who has created a superb showcase for the club and who would dearly like more of you to use it and contribute. The website really reduces the cost of having to print and mail information to yourselves. It is very easy to browse and contains all you really need to know about WORC.
Many of you will receive this letter by e-mail but for those who have not provided me with an email address, I will deliver this missive to your door. If you do have access to the internet please make sure I have your details.
Dates for your Diary
Please note, in response to many requests by members to delay our start time, we will now open WORC for the last Sunday of the month drinks at 13.00 hrs and finish at 15.00hrs.
Sunday 30th September Brunch & Drinks
The bar open as usual but with the added attraction of Irish Soda Bread covered with Smoked Salmon, chopped eggs, onions & capers. Served with jugs of Bloody-Mary and Bucks Fizz. Bar open as usual. Non-ticketed event, £10 on the door all food and drinks included, guests most welcome.
As previously mentioned in dispatches, we had earmarked October for the Annual Dinner, which we have now postponed until the Spring of 2008 when hopefully we can find a venue that can accommodate at least 150 people for a ‘seated dinner’ without having to travel too far from the village. (Any suggestions greatly appreciated) Therefore the following event is being organised as an alternative.
Friday 12th October French Night
Please look at website for final details.
Sunday 11th November Remembrance Sunday
Please see the Laurence Knox article later in this newsletter.
Friday 30th November Italian Food Night & Quiz
To support the Wivenhoe Christmas Lights Appeal, an evening of fantastic Italian food kindly and generously prepared by one of our members Mothers, who just happens to be Italian! A quiz to keep you occupied, and it’s all for a great local cause. A maximum of 6 players per team, all food and drinks included, £15 per team member, all profits going to the Christmas Lights Appeal.
Sunday 16th December Christmas Cocktail Party
To celebrate our 1st anniversary, a lunchtime party to enjoy our first year in existence enhanced by some very good live music.
Saturday 29th December 11.00hrs AGM
We had to start somewhere but now it is your chance to have a say and appoint your committee. The Committee find the notion of ‘self-appointed’ uncomfortable so we are asking you for your mandate as members. I will circulate further details in the next few weeks but please put this date in your diary.
Royal British Legion Matters by Laurence Knox
The RBL in Wivenhoe is losing Richard Gladwin who has been ably filling the posts of Treasurer, Membership Secretary and general "Mr Fixit". Richard is moving away from the area. At the same time the Branch Vice Chairman has become very ill and his wife, the Branch Secretary, is retiring to look after him. At a Branch meeting held on the 18th September, The Chairman, the Reverend Patrick Baxter, laid out the situation to us in very stark terms - Legion Headquarters will close the Wivenhoe Branch if these key posts are not filled very soon. It is a matter of pride that WORC has supplied all the newer and younger members of the Branch but it was made crystal clear that in joining the RBL we have taken on responsibilities. I have cajoled people to fill all these posts from among our members because of the urgency of the situation but each of you who have joined the RBL will soon have your say. To put everyone in the picture I will allow my name to go forward for Vice Chairman, our own hard worked Hon Sec will volunteer himself for Branch Secretary and Iain & Jan Ward have agreed to being nominated for Membership Secretary and Treasurer. If anyone, however, has strong feelings on the matter would they please respond to either me or Hon Sec. Other volunteers are also needed for various aspects of the Branch's work including The Poppy Appeal and manning and stocking the bar for the regular meetings.
On a lighter note, I was delighted to be able to introduce the "old membership" of the RBL to WORC and what it does. There was, of course, special emphasis on our relationship with and to the RBL Wivenhoe. They were delighted and I was taken aback by their kind feelings towards "the noisy lot upstairs". The quid pro quo on this, however, is that in a moment of warm fellow-feeling I volunteered to be Parade Master for The Remembrance Day parade - well, it may boost your attendance......... if only out of curiosity!
Remembrance Sunday in Wivenhoe will follow this format: a march from the Congregational Church commencing at 14.15 prompt; Church service at St Mary's; the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial; tea at the RBL and at 17.00 WORC will begin its gathering wherein there will be suitable entertainment - songs of the forties. For those of you with youngsters who want to participate, children can follow a military band that leaves the William Loveless to coincide with the end of Service at St. Mary’s but prior to the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial.
I cannot go with out mentioning the Legion's "The Covenant Campaign" details of which can be found at www.brokencovenant.org.uk and at www.britishlegion.org.uk here you will find details of the campaign to force government to provide just and fair treatment for bereaved service families and service disabled, it merits your support.
