The Wivenhoe Ocean Racing Club celebrated its’ inaugural cocktail party just before Christmas 2006, with some 70 folk from the village attending the event held in the Royal British Legion Hall, previously the home of Wivenhoe Sailing Club.
The idea to form the club was the brain child of Laurence Knox and Brian O’Dell. Essentially being a ‘forum for fun, it also is seriously committed to ensuring that the building remains with the RBL and continues as a great community venue. It would be very sad to see a wonderful location, with such a picturesque outlook being turned into yet more flats. To this end, all members of WORC have been encouraged to take up membership of the Royal British Legion.
The grandiose title was borrowed from an amusing incident that happened to a couple of the members during the Summer of 2005. All packed and provisioned for a days sailing the pair turned up on the Quay only to find their boat high a dry on the mud. It appears the tide tables of the previous year had been used in preparation for the trip! Crest fallen, the pair retired to The Rose and Crown and over a pint, the Wivenhoe Ocean Racing Club was dreamt-up, where you talk a good story about sailing on dry land.
The club has a number of events planned for 2007, from cocktail parties to curry lunches. Membership is by proposal.
