Message from the Commodore

Welcome to the Wivenhoe Ocean Racing Club website.  The Club, we call ourselves WORC for short though we believe we WORC tall (sorry), is a fun organisation with a serious agenda.  Wivenhoe, "the village", is suffering serious heart problems - any building that becomes available is rapidly turned into apartments, our quirky streets overdeveloped, our independence threatened by overweaning authority - the heart of our extraordinary little community is being put under a great strain.  We could easily have called ourselves "The Wivenhoe Go Away And Leave Us Alone Club" but we liked the Wivenhoe Ocean Racing Club, after all what was so holy, Roman or imperial about the Holy Roman Empire!

In the "beginnings" web page our secretary, Martyn Carrick, has given you the beginnings of the Club and it could all look as though we are just 'avin' a larf.  Well, we are but there is also a serious intent.  The Royal British Legion, Wivenhoe occupies the last building on Wivenhoe quay which the developers have not got their hands on.  Its membership is ageing, the premises have had other occasional community functions but not enough to prevent eventual closure.  We are also constantly and often sadly reminded that we are very close to one of the UK's largest garrisons, home to 16 Air Assault Brigade and other units which have borne the brunt of all our latest military deployments.  It seems logical that in our fight for our town and one of its important amenities we should try our utmost to preserve the organisation which supports our fighting men and women.  That is why we encourage all members of WORC also to join the RBL.

Encouraged by a burgeoning membership WORC has had a series of very successful functions in its short history.  We meet on the last Sunday of the month and events tend to alternate from a drinks party to an arranged and ticketed function.  We have been and continue to be greatly blessed by a very helpful and willing membership.

To all of you who have already joined - "the WORC'll do you good!"  To those thinking of joining, go on -"take a WORC on the wild side!"  (For information on joining contact Martyn Carrick )
